Günegezegenler, also known as exoplanets, are planets that orbit stars outside our solar system. Their discovery and study have revolutionized our understanding of planetary formation and the potential for life beyond Earth. The first confirmed exoplanet was discovered in 1992 orbiting a pulsar, but the first orbiting a Sun-like star was found in 1995.

Since then, thousands of exoplanets have been detected using various methods, primarily the transit method, where astronomers observe the slight dimming of a star as a planet passes in front of it, and the radial velocity method, which detects the wobble of a star caused by the gravitational pull of an orbiting planet. Other methods include direct imaging and gravitational microlensing.

Exoplanets vary widely in size, mass, and orbital characteristics. They range from gas giants similar to Jupiter to rocky planets comparable in size to Earth. Some orbit their stars very closely, experiencing extreme temperatures, while others are found in the habitable zone, the region around a star where liquid water could potentially exist on a planet's surface.

The search for exoplanets is an active field of astronomical research. Missions like the Kepler Space Telescope and the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) have been instrumental in discovering many of these distant worlds. Future telescopes, such as the James Webb Space Telescope, are capable of analyzing the atmospheres of exoplanets, searching for biosignatures that might indicate the presence of life. The study of exoplanets continues to expand our cosmic perspective and address fundamental questions about our place in the universe.
