Gázelegyszeparáció, also known as gas separation, refers to a process that separates a mixture of gases into two or more individual gases. This separation is achieved by exploiting differences in the physical or chemical properties of the constituent gases. Various methods are employed for gas separation, each suited to specific applications and gas mixtures.

Common techniques include cryogenic distillation, where gases are liquefied by cooling them to very low temperatures and then separated based on their boiling points. Membrane separation is another widely used method, employing semi-permeable membranes that allow certain gases to pass through more readily than others. Pressure swing adsorption (PSA) and vacuum swing adsorption (VSA) utilize solid adsorbent materials that selectively adsorb certain gases under pressure, releasing them when the pressure is reduced.

Gas separation is a crucial industrial process with applications spanning numerous sectors. It is essential in the production of industrial gases like oxygen, nitrogen, and argon for use in welding, medical applications, and chemical manufacturing. In the petrochemical industry, gas separation is used to purify natural gas, remove impurities from synthesis gas, and recover valuable components. Environmental applications include the capture of carbon dioxide from flue gases to mitigate climate change and the purification of air. The choice of separation method depends on factors such as the composition of the gas mixture, the desired purity of the separated gases, the required throughput, and economic considerations.
