Fuusiovoimaa

Fuusiovoimaa, or nuclear fusion, is a process by which two light atomic nuclei combine to form a heavier nucleus, releasing a large amount of energy in the process. This is the same process that powers the sun and other stars. In nuclear fusion, the mass of the resulting nucleus is less than the sum of the masses of the original nuclei, and the difference is converted into energy according to Einstein's equation E=mc².

The most common type of nuclear fusion reaction is the proton-proton chain reaction, which is the primary process by which stars like our sun generate energy. In this reaction, two protons (hydrogen nuclei) fuse to form a deuterium nucleus (an isotope of hydrogen with one proton and one neutron), a positron (a positively charged electron), and a neutrino. The positron and electron then annihilate each other, releasing energy. The deuterium nucleus can then fuse with another proton to form a helium-3 nucleus, and finally, two helium-3 nuclei can fuse to form a helium-4 nucleus, two protons, and energy.

Nuclear fusion is a highly efficient process, with a much higher energy yield per unit mass than nuclear fission, the process used in nuclear power plants. However, achieving and sustaining nuclear fusion reactions on Earth has proven to be extremely challenging. The high temperatures and pressures required for fusion to occur are difficult to achieve and maintain, and the resulting plasma is highly unstable.

Despite these challenges, researchers around the world are working on developing practical nuclear fusion reactors. If successful, these reactors could provide a virtually limitless source of clean, safe, and sustainable energy. The International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) is one such project, aimed at demonstrating the feasibility of nuclear fusion as a large-scale and carbon-free source of energy.
