Fuusioräjäytyksissä refers to nuclear fusion explosions, a process distinct from nuclear fission explosions. In a fusion explosion, atomic nuclei of light elements, such as isotopes of hydrogen (deuterium and tritium), are forced together under immense pressure and temperature. This process, mirroring the energy generation within stars, creates heavier elements and releases a vast amount of energy. The conditions necessary for initiating fusion on Earth are extraordinarily difficult to achieve and sustain.

The primary mechanism to achieve these conditions involves a fission explosion. A small fission bomb acts as a trigger, generating the extreme temperatures and pressures required to initiate the fusion reactions in the surrounding fusion fuel. This combination of fission and fusion is the basis of thermonuclear weapons, often referred to as hydrogen bombs. The energy yield from a fusion explosion is significantly greater than that of a pure fission explosion, making them the most powerful weapons ever developed. The intense heat and radiation produced by a fusion explosion are also a major destructive factor.
