Fuqizim

Fuqizim is an Albanian term meaning empowerment. It refers to the process through which individuals or groups gain the power, resources, authority, and confidence to make decisions and participate fully in social, economic, and political life. The concept emphasizes increasing agency, reducing dependency, and expanding rights.

Originating from "fuqi" meaning power, fuqizim employs the suffix "-izim" to denote a process or state. In Albanian usage, it is commonly translated as "empowerment" and is applied in policy, development, and social discourse to describe initiatives that widen people’s control over their circumstances.

Fuqizim is used across fields such as gender equality, education, health, and community development. Critics warn that empowerment programs can be context-insensitive or reproduce power imbalances if they are top-down or donor-driven, highlighting the need for participatory, locally driven strategies and careful monitoring.
