Funktsiooniks

Funktsiooniks is the translative form of the Estonian noun funktsioon, meaning function. The translative case (-ks) is used to express designation, role, or change of state, similar to English "as a function" or "into a function." Consequently, funktsiooniks appears in contexts where something is described as functioning in a particular capacity or is transformed into a function.

In everyday and technical language, funktsiooniks can denote both mathematical and non-mathematical functions. In mathematics, funktsioon denotes a rule that assigns each element of one set to exactly one element of another set; the form funktsiooniks is used when stating that a given object should be regarded as a function or when describing its role within a larger structure. In computing, it may describe a component's function within a program or system. In broader usage, it can express the purpose or role of an object, for example describing an object's function within an organization.

Etymology: funktsioon is borrowed from German Funktion (and ultimately from Latin functio). The translative form -ks is a standard way in Estonian to express designation or transformation.
