Friktionsarbetslösheten, often translated as frictional unemployment, refers to the short-term unemployment that occurs when individuals are in the process of transitioning between jobs. This type of unemployment is considered a natural and often unavoidable part of a dynamic labor market. It arises because it takes time for workers to find new employment that matches their skills and preferences, and for employers to find suitable candidates to fill their vacancies.

This transition period can be due to various reasons. A worker might be leaving a job voluntarily to seek better opportunities, be laid off, or have just entered the labor market, such as a recent graduate. Simultaneously, employers may need time to advertise positions, screen applications, conduct interviews, and make hiring decisions. During this interval, both the job seeker and the employer are actively engaged in the matching process, but the employment relationship has not yet been established.

Friktionsarbetslösheten is generally seen as a sign of a healthy economy, as it implies that workers are mobile and willing to move to better-suited jobs. It is distinct from structural unemployment, which involves a mismatch between worker skills and available jobs, and cyclical unemployment, which is tied to economic downturns. Policies aimed at reducing friktionsarbetslösheten often focus on improving information flow in the labor market, such as through better job placement services and career counseling, to shorten the time it takes for individuals to find new employment.
