Friktionsantænding, also known as frictional ignition, is a phenomenon where heat generated by friction between two surfaces causes combustible materials to ignite. This process requires three essential components: fuel (the combustible material), an oxidizer (typically oxygen from the air), and an ignition source, which in this case is the heat from friction. The temperature generated by friction must reach the autoignition temperature of the fuel for combustion to occur.

Various scenarios can lead to friktionsantænding. In industrial settings, this can occur in machinery with moving parts, such as rotating shafts, bearings, or conveyor belts, where lubrication is inadequate or absent, leading to excessive friction. Sparks generated by friction can also act as ignition sources if they come into contact with flammable gases, vapors, or dusts. In natural environments, phenomena like meteorites entering the Earth's atmosphere generate intense heat through air friction, though this is a different context than typical material friction.
