Friendsters

Friendster was a social networking website launched in 2002. It was one of the first major platforms of its kind, predating MySpace and Facebook. The site allowed users to create profiles, connect with friends, and share personal information and photos. It gained significant popularity, especially in Southeast Asia, and was instrumental in the early development of online social interaction.

The platform's initial success was rapid, attracting millions of users. Friendster's design focused on showcasing personal connections through a "friends of friends" network. Users could also leave messages and "testimonials" for each other. However, as newer and more feature-rich platforms emerged, Friendster struggled to retain its user base and adapt to changing trends in social media.

In the mid-2000s, competition intensified, and Friendster's popularity began to wane in Western markets. The company attempted to pivot, shifting its focus to a gaming platform in 2011. This strategic change, however, did not revive the site's former glory. Friendster officially ceased operations in 2015. Despite its eventual decline, Friendster remains a significant part of social media history, representing an early phase of how people connected and interacted online.
