An operator T: X -> Y, where X and Y are Banach spaces, is called a Fredholm operator if it satisfies three conditions. First, the image of T, denoted as Im(T), must be a closed subspace of Y. Second, the kernel of T, Ker(T), which is the set of all x in X such that T(x) = 0, must have finite dimension. Third, the dimension of the quotient space Y/Im(T) must also be finite.

The dimension of the kernel of a Fredholm operator is called its nullity, and the dimension of the quotient space Y/Im(T) is called its defect. A key property of Fredholm operators is that if T is a Fredholm operator, then its index, defined as nullity(T) - defect(T), is invariant under small perturbations. This means that if S is another bounded linear operator such that the norm of S - T is sufficiently small, then S is also a Fredholm operator and has the same index as T.

Fredholm operators play a crucial role in various areas of mathematics, including the study of differential equations and index theory. The Fredholm alternative theorem is a fundamental result stating that for a linear operator T between Hilbert spaces, either T has a bounded inverse, or its adjoint operator T* has a non-trivial kernel.
