Frageäußerungen

Frageäußerungen, also known as interrogative utterances, are linguistic expressions used to ask questions. They are a fundamental component of communication, enabling individuals to seek information, clarify doubts, and engage in dialogue. In German linguistics, the term "Frageäußerung" specifically refers to the act of posing a question.

Frageäußerungen can take various forms, including wh-questions (Fragen mit Fragewörtern) which begin with interrogative words like wer (who), was (what), wo (where), wann (when), warum (why), wie (how), and welche/welcher/welches (which), and yes/no questions (Ja/Nein-Fragen) that typically involve an inversion of the subject and verb or a specific intonation pattern. There are also rhetorical questions (Rhetorische Fragen) which are posed for effect rather than to elicit an answer, and indirect questions (Indirekte Fragen) that are embedded within a statement or another question.

The primary function of Frageäußerungen is information seeking. However, they can also serve other purposes such as expressing surprise, demanding an explanation, or initiating a conversation. The interpretation of a Frageäußerung depends not only on its grammatical structure but also on its context, intonation, and the shared knowledge between the speaker and the listener.
