Fotoemissioessa, also known as the photoelectric effect, is a phenomenon where electrons are emitted from a material when light shines on it. This effect is a cornerstone of quantum mechanics and has significant practical applications.

The emission of electrons occurs when photons, the particles of light, strike the material's surface. If a photon has sufficient energy, it can transfer this energy to an electron in the material, allowing the electron to overcome the binding forces and escape. The minimum energy required for an electron to be emitted is called the work function, which is a characteristic property of the material.

The energy of a photon is directly proportional to its frequency, as described by Planck's equation, E = hf, where E is energy, h is Planck's constant, and f is frequency. This means that light with a higher frequency (shorter wavelength) carries more energy and is more likely to cause photoemission. If the energy of the incident photons is less than the work function, no electrons will be emitted, regardless of the intensity of the light.

Conversely, if the photon energy exceeds the work function, the excess energy is converted into the kinetic energy of the emitted electron. This relationship was experimentally observed by Heinrich Hertz and later explained by Albert Einstein, who proposed that light energy is quantized into discrete packets (photons).

The photoelectric effect is utilized in various technologies, including photomultiplier tubes, solar cells, and image sensors in digital cameras. These devices rely on the principle of converting light energy into electrical signals through the emission of electrons.
