Foszfátércekben refers to sedimentary rocks that contain a significant concentration of phosphate minerals. The most common phosphate minerals found in these ores include apatite, such as fluorapatite, chlorapatite, and hydroxyapatite.

The formation of phosphate rock deposits typically occurs in marine environments. Conditions conducive to their formation often involve upwelling of nutrient-rich deep ocean water, leading to increased biological productivity and subsequent accumulation of phosphorus-rich organic matter on the seafloor. Over geological time, this organic material, along with dissolved phosphates, precipitates and lithifies to form sedimentary phosphate rocks.

Key global deposits are found in North Africa (Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria), the Middle East (Jordan, Syria), and China. The mining and processing of phosphate rock are essential industries, as phosphorus is a non-renewable resource that cannot be synthesized. Its primary use is in the production of phosphate fertilizers, which are critical for global agriculture and food security. Beyond agriculture, phosphates are also used in detergents, animal feed, and various industrial applications.
