Fosfórhópurinn
Fosfórhópurinn is a term used in biochemistry to refer to a phosphate group. A phosphate group is an anion of phosphoric acid, with the chemical formula PO4^3−. It consists of a central phosphorus atom covalently bonded to four oxygen atoms. In biological systems, phosphate groups are extremely important. They are a key component of nucleotides, which are the building blocks of DNA and RNA. The energy currency of the cell, adenosine triphosphate (ATP), is also a nucleotide that carries energy in its phosphate bonds.
When a phosphate group is attached to another molecule, it forms a phosphate ester or a phosphoamide.
