Fosforikierrätykset refers to the processes and technologies aimed at recovering and reusing phosphorus from various waste streams. Phosphorus is a critical nutrient for agriculture, but global reserves are finite and unevenly distributed. Recycling phosphorus is therefore essential for sustainable agriculture and reducing reliance on mined phosphate rock.

Sources of phosphorus for recycling include municipal wastewater, animal manure, and industrial by-products like ash from sewage sludge incineration. Wastewater treatment plants are a primary target for phosphorus recovery due to the high concentration of phosphorus in sewage. Technologies used for recovery can be chemical, such as precipitation with agents like struvite (magnesium ammonium phosphate), or biological. Struvite is a valuable slow-release fertilizer that can be used in agriculture.

Other methods include thermal processes and extraction from ash. The recovered phosphorus can be processed into fertilizers or used in other industrial applications.
