Fosfodiestrowy refers to a type of chemical bond where a phosphate group bridges two other molecules. This linkage is fundamental to the structure of nucleic acids, DNA and RNA. In these biomolecules, the phosphodiester bond connects the 5' carbon of one deoxyribose or ribose sugar to the 3' carbon of the next sugar unit, forming the sugar-phosphate backbone. This repeating structure provides stability and allows for the linear sequence of nucleotides that encodes genetic information.

The formation of a phosphodiester bond involves a dehydration reaction, where a molecule of water is released. Conversely, the hydrolysis of a phosphodiester bond breaks this linkage, a process that can occur spontaneously but is also catalyzed by enzymes called phosphodiesterases. These enzymes play crucial roles in regulating the cellular concentrations of signaling molecules like cyclic AMP (cAMP) and cyclic GMP (cGMP), which also contain phosphodiester bonds.
