Forældreråd

Forældreråd are parent councils at Danish educational settings, such as primary and lower secondary schools and day-care centers. They are advisory bodies that represent parents and provide a forum for parental input on matters affecting the institution, including the learning environment, discipline policies, inclusion and special education, communication, and daily routines. The council typically consists of parent representatives elected by the parents of children at the institution, and it may include staff observers. A chair (and sometimes a deputy) is elected from among the members.

The main tasks of a forældreråd are to collect and relay parents’ views, propose initiatives, participate in development and annual plans, and help disseminate information to families. It serves as a link between families and school leadership, collaborating with the principal, teachers, and the municipal education administration. The council’s recommendations are advisory, and formal decisions usually remain with the school or the relevant authority, though the forældreråd can influence policy through consultation processes and interactions with the school board (skolebestyrelse) or other governance structures.

In practice, forældreråd are common at many institutions and reflect an emphasis on parental involvement in Danish education. The exact rights, duties, and procedures of forældreråd vary by municipality and institution, but the overarching aim is to foster constructive cooperation and a healthy school climate by enabling active parent participation.
