Forlengers

Forlengers are electrical extension devices used to extend the reach of a power outlet. The term is primarily Dutch and translates to extension lead or extension cord in English. In English-speaking contexts, the concept is described as an extension cord, extension lead, or power strip when multiple outlets or built-in surge protection are involved. Forlengers enable devices to be powered at a distance from fixed outlets, improving flexibility in homes, workplaces, and outdoor settings.

Common variants include portable extension cords, fixed-length reels, and power strips. A portable extension cord consists of an insulated conductor with a male plug at one end and a female receptacle at the other. Power strips add several outlets and may include surge protection or overload protection. Outdoor variants are weather-rated and use more rugged sheathing to withstand moisture, UV exposure, and temperature fluctuations.

Technical considerations include conductor gauge, length, and voltage rating. Longer cords introduce more resistance, leading to voltage drop and reduced performance for some devices; higher load drawings should be avoided on long, thin cords. Cords are designed for indoor dry use or outdoor use, depending on rating. It is important to match the cord’s amperage and voltage rating to the intended load, avoid daisy-chaining multiple forlengers, and inspect for damage before use. Damaged cords should be retired, not repaired with tape or makeshift fixes. In wet or damp areas, use a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) and outdoor-rated equipment.
