Folosete

Folosete is the non-diacritic form that appears in Romanian texts when diacritical marks are omitted. In standard Romanian, the verb a folosi means to use, and its present tense form used with he/she/it is folosește (with the s-cedilla-like ș). The imperative form for the second person singular is also folosește, as in “Folosește-l!” meaning “Use it!” The non-diacritic variant folosete is not considered correct in formal writing, but it is commonly seen in informal messages, on devices or fonts that cannot display diacritics, and in some historical or simplified texts.

Etymology and morphology: Foloseste is derived from the verb a folosi, with the standard diacritics indicating the correct pronunciation and meaning. The Romanian alphabet uses several diacritics to distinguish sounds, such as ș for the “sh” sound and ț for the “ts” sound. When diacritics are removed, the distinction between folosește and folosete is lost, which can lead to misreadings or ambiguity.

Usage considerations: In formal or edited Romanian, the diacritic form folosește should be used to convey the precise meaning and grammatical function. The non-diacritic form folosete should be corrected to folosește in professional texts, dictionaries, and educational materials.
