A foliole is a leaflet of a compound leaf. Compound leaves are those divided into several distinct parts, known as leaflets. In contrast, a simple leaf is not divided into leaflets. The term foliole is most commonly used when describing the structure of a compound leaf where the leaflets are arranged in a pinnate or palmate fashion. For example, in a pea plant, the leaf is compound, and each of the smaller divisions is a foliole.
