One common category is volumetric flow meters, which measure the volume of fluid passing a point per unit of time. Examples include turbine meters, where a rotor spins at a speed proportional to the flow, and positive displacement meters, which trap a known volume of fluid with each rotation or cycle. Another type is mass flow meters, which directly measure the mass of fluid flowing per unit of time. Coriolis meters, which utilize the Coriolis effect on a vibrating tube, are a prominent example of mass flow measurement.

Differential pressure flow meters are widely used and work by creating a restriction in the flow path, such as an orifice plate, venturi tube, or flow nozzle. The pressure difference across this restriction is then measured and correlated to the flow rate using Bernoulli's principle. Furthermore, velocity flow meters measure the fluid's speed, and this velocity is then used to calculate the volumetric flow rate by multiplying it with the cross-sectional area of the pipe. Ultrasonic and magnetic flow meters fall into this category.
