Fluxmittel

Fluxmittel, also known as flux, is a chemical cleaning agent used in soldering and welding processes. Its primary function is to remove oxides and other contaminants from the surfaces of the metals being joined. This removal is crucial because oxides act as insulators, preventing the molten solder or filler metal from properly wetting and bonding to the base materials.

The active ingredients in flux typically include acids or salts that react with metal oxides at elevated temperatures, converting them into soluble compounds or easily removable slag. These dissolved oxides are then swept away by the molten flux, leaving a clean surface for the joining material. Additionally, flux can prevent further oxidation during the heating process by forming a protective layer over the heated metal.

Fluxes come in various forms, including pastes, liquids, solids (like rosin cores in solder wire), and powders. The choice of flux depends on the specific metals being joined, the soldering or welding temperature, and environmental considerations. For example, rosin-based fluxes are common in electronics soldering due to their non-corrosive nature after application. Water-soluble fluxes are also available and require thorough rinsing after use. The proper application and subsequent removal of flux residue are important for the integrity and longevity of the soldered or welded joint.
