Fluktrespons

Fluktrespons, also known as the fight-or-flight response, is an involuntary physiological reaction that occurs in response to a perceived harmful event or threat. This ancient survival mechanism prepares an organism to either confront the danger or to escape from it. The response is triggered by the sympathetic nervous system and the release of stress hormones like adrenaline and cortisol.

When a threat is detected, the brain rapidly assesses the situation and signals the adrenal glands to produce these hormones. This surge of hormones leads to a cascade of physical changes. Heart rate increases, blood pressure rises, and breathing becomes faster, all to deliver more oxygen and energy to muscles. Blood is redirected away from non-essential functions, such as digestion, to the limbs, preparing them for immediate action. Pupils dilate to improve vision, and senses become heightened.

The fluktrespons is designed to be a short-term reaction. Once the perceived threat has passed, the parasympathetic nervous system takes over, initiating a “rest and digest” state to return the body to its normal functioning. While incredibly beneficial for survival in immediate danger, chronic activation of the fluktrespons due to prolonged stress can have detrimental effects on physical and mental health. This can manifest as anxiety, sleep disturbances, digestive issues, and a weakened immune system. Understanding the fluktrespons is key to managing stress and maintaining overall well-being.
