Flippasemediated refers to a biological process where the enzyme flippase facilitates the movement of lipids across the lipid bilayer of a cell membrane. This movement, known as transmembrane lipid translocation, is crucial for maintaining the asymmetry and proper function of cellular membranes. Lipid bilayers are composed of two layers of lipids, and flippase plays a specific role in transporting certain types of lipids, such as phosphatidylserine, from one leaflet of the membrane to the other.

There are different types of flippases, often categorized by the specific lipids they transport and the direction of movement. For instance, aminophospholipid translocases are ATP-dependent flippases that move phosphatidylserine and phosphatidylethanolamine from the outer leaflet to the inner leaflet of the plasma membrane. Conversely, floppases move lipids from the inner to the outer leaflet, and scramblases move lipids in both directions non-specifically.
