Flanks

Flank is a general term that refers to the side or edge of an object, structure, or organism. The precise meaning depends on context, but it is commonly used to describe the lateral portion opposite the front and back.

In human anatomy, the flanks are the sides of the torso between the lower ribs and the pelvis. The flank region contains muscles of the lateral abdominal wall and is a site evaluated in medical assessment; pain in the flank can indicate kidney or urinary tract issues, musculoskeletal strain, or abdominal pathology.

In culinary contexts, flank refers to a cut of meat from the abdominal area of cattle known as flank steak. It is a lean, flavorful cut that is commonly marinated and grilled or sliced for dishes such as fajitas.

In geography and geology, the flank of a mountain or volcano is one of its lateral sides. Flanks can be steep and prone to erosion; volcanic flanks may experience eruptions or collapses that influence landscape and hazards.

In military usage, a flank is the side of a formation. Attacking or threatening an opponent’s flank can disrupt defenses; protecting one’s own flanks is a basic principle of tactical positioning.
