Filmsprache (film language) is the system of visual, acoustic, and narrative devices through which cinema encodes and transmits meaning. It encompasses image composition, camera work, lighting, color, editing, sound design, music, and performance, as well as mise-en-scène and spatial relations within the frame. Together these elements function like a language with its own grammar and syntax: viewers learn conventions to interpret meaning, such as the close-up signaling subjectivity, the long shot establishing setting, or continuity editing guiding seamless action.
