Filöverföringsprotokoll, often abbreviated as FTP, refers to a set of rules and standards that govern how data is transferred between computers over a network. These protocols define the commands and responses used to establish a connection, navigate directories, and transfer files. The primary goal of file transfer protocols is to ensure reliable and efficient movement of data, regardless of the underlying network infrastructure or operating systems involved.

Several file transfer protocols exist, each with its own characteristics and use cases. The most well-known is the File Transfer Protocol (FTP), which has been in use for decades. FTP operates on a client-server model, where a client initiates a connection to an FTP server to request or send files. While FTP is widely supported, it has been criticized for its lack of security, as data is often transmitted in plain text.

To address security concerns, secure alternatives have emerged. Secure File Transfer Protocol (SFTP) is one such protocol, which uses SSH (Secure Shell) to encrypt both the connection and the data being transferred, providing a much higher level of security. Another secure option is FTPS (FTP Secure), which adds TLS/SSL encryption to the traditional FTP protocol. The choice of protocol often depends on the specific requirements for security, performance, and compatibility with existing systems. Understanding these protocols is crucial for managing and securing data movement in networked environments.
