FieldDirected

Fielddirected is an adjective describing phenomena or processes in which an external field directs or constrains the motion, orientation, assembly, or growth of matter. Common fields include electric, magnetic, gravitational, and flow or acoustic fields. In fielddirected systems, dipoles or polarizable components respond to field gradients by experiencing forces or torques that bias their positions and alignments, enabling controlled organization at micro- and nanoscale.

Mechanisms and methods: Dielectrophoresis and electrophoresis use electric fields to manipulate particles; magnetophoresis and magnetic torque orient magnetic or magnetically susceptible entities; magnetic and electric fields can also induce preferential growth directions in crystals, a form of anisotropic fielddirected crystallization. Flow fields in microfluidics or acoustic fields can likewise direct assembly and patterning.

Applications: fielddirected self-assembly of nanoparticles into chains or lattices; alignment of liquid-crystalline materials and anisotropic polymers; oriented deposition of thin films; fielddirected crystallization to control microstructure; microfabrication and sensor surfaces; tissue engineering where flow fields guide cell alignment.

Key considerations: field strength, gradient, and frequency (for AC fields); material properties such as dielectric constant, magnetic susceptibility, and conductivity; temperature and viscosity; potential for heating, defects, or nonuniformities.
