Festgasförmig is a German term that describes a state of matter where a substance transitions directly from a solid to a gaseous state without passing through the liquid phase. This process is known as sublimation. Conversely, the reverse process, where a gas directly transforms into a solid, is called deposition or desublimation.

Sublimation is a phenomenon that occurs when the vapor pressure of a solid exceeds the surrounding atmospheric pressure at a given temperature. This allows the solid particles to escape directly into the gaseous phase. Common examples of substances that readily sublime include dry ice (solid carbon dioxide) and iodine. At standard atmospheric pressure, dry ice does not melt into liquid carbon dioxide; instead, it directly turns into gaseous carbon dioxide. Similarly, iodine crystals, when heated, produce a purple vapor without becoming liquid.

Deposition, the opposite of sublimation, is less commonly observed in everyday life but is crucial in certain industrial and natural processes. Frost formation on cold surfaces is a common example of deposition, where water vapor in the air directly transforms into ice crystals. The formation of snowflakes in clouds is also a result of water vapor depositing onto ice nuclei.
