Fenotípusátadás, a term of Hungarian origin, translates to phenotype transmission. It describes the process by which acquired characteristics or traits developed by an organism during its lifetime can be passed on to its offspring. This concept challenges traditional Mendelian genetics, which primarily focuses on the inheritance of genetic material through DNA.

The idea of phenotype transmission suggests that environmental influences, experiences, and even learned behaviors can leave a mark on an organism that is inheritable. For example, if an organism adapts to a specific diet or stressor, the physiological or behavioral changes resulting from this adaptation might be transmitted to its progeny. This could occur through mechanisms beyond direct genetic mutation, such as epigenetic modifications.

Epigenetics plays a crucial role in understanding phenotype transmission. These are changes in gene expression that do not involve alterations to the underlying DNA sequence.
