Faial
Faial is an island in the Azores, an autonomous region of Portugal, located in the central group of the archipelago between Pico and São Jorge. It spans a modest area and is known for a volcanic landscape dominated by a central caldera and a western peninsula. The highest point on the island is Cabeço Gordo, at about 1,043 meters. A defining feature is the Capelo Peninsula and the Caldeira, a large crater that shapes the interior landscape. The western tip is home to Capelinhos, where a volcanic eruption in 1957–1958 created new land and significantly altered the coastline, an event commemorated by a dedicated interpretation center.
