Gas-filled shock absorbers use compressed gas to dampen the suspension, while oil-filled shock absorbers rely on the viscosity of oil to achieve the same effect. Both types can be further classified as either monotube or twin-tube designs, depending on their internal structure.

Shock absorbers are typically mounted between the suspension components and the vehicle's chassis. They are designed to operate in both compression and rebound modes. In compression, the shock absorber absorbs energy as the wheel moves downward, while in rebound, it absorbs energy as the wheel moves upward.

The performance of shock absorbers is influenced by several factors, including the type of gas or oil used, the design of the shock absorber, and the specific application for which it is intended. In high-performance vehicles, shock absorbers are often tuned to provide a balance between ride comfort and handling, while in off-road vehicles, they may be designed to handle the rough terrain more effectively.

Regular maintenance of shock absorbers is essential to ensure their proper functioning. This includes checking for leaks, replacing worn-out components, and ensuring that the shock absorbers are properly adjusted. In some cases, shock absorbers may need to be replaced entirely if they are severely damaged or worn out.
