Fagosyyttiin

Fagosyyttiin is a term derived from the Greek words "phago" meaning "to eat" and "syttein" meaning "to destroy." It refers to the process by which certain cells, known as phagocytes, engulf and digest foreign particles, such as bacteria, viruses, or cellular debris. This process is crucial for the immune system's ability to defend the body against infections and maintain overall health.

Phagocytosis involves several steps. First, the phagocyte recognizes the foreign particle through specific receptors on its surface. Once recognized, the phagocyte extends pseudopodia, which surround and engulf the particle, forming a phagosome. The phagosome then fuses with lysosomes, which contain digestive enzymes. These enzymes break down the contents of the phagosome, allowing the phagocyte to digest and eliminate the foreign particle.
