Faasimuudatused refers to changes in the phase of a substance. A phase is a distinct form of matter that is uniform throughout in chemical composition and physical state. The most common phases are solid, liquid, and gas. Transitions between these phases occur when energy is added or removed, typically in the form of heat.

For example, when ice (solid water) is heated, it undergoes a phase change to liquid water at its melting point. Further heating of liquid water causes it to change phase into steam (gaseous water) at its boiling point. These processes are reversible; cooling steam causes it to condense back into liquid water, and cooling liquid water below its freezing point causes it to solidify into ice.

Other phase transitions exist, such as sublimation, where a solid directly transforms into a gas, bypassing the liquid phase (e.g., dry ice). Deposition is the reverse process, where a gas directly becomes a solid. Plasma is often considered a fourth state of matter, distinct from solid, liquid, and gas, formed by ionizing a gas at very high temperatures.
