FVIIIhaltige is a German term used to describe substances or preparations that contain coagulation factor VIII (FVIII). In medical and pharmaceutical contexts, the designation helps distinguish FVIII-containing products from those that do not include this clotting factor. FVIII is essential for the intrinsic pathway of blood coagulation; its deficiency causes hemophilia A, a condition marked by prolonged bleeding.

FVIIIhaltige preparations include plasma-derived FVIII concentrates and recombinant FVIII products. Plasma-derived concentrates originate from human plasma and undergo purification and viral inactivation steps to reduce infection risk. Recombinant FVIII products are produced without human plasma, offering FVIII activity through biotechnological methods. Some products are engineered to have extended half-lives to allow less frequent dosing.

Indications for FVIIIhaltige products primarily involve replacement therapy for people with hemophilia A. They are used to treat active bleeding, to prevent bleeds during surgery or other procedures, and to maintain baseline FVIII levels in individuals with severe deficiencies. In certain situations, FVIII is used in combination with von Willebrand factor concentrates.

Safety and monitoring are key considerations with FVIIIhaltige products. Advances in manufacturing, donor screening, and viral inactivation have substantially reduced infectious risk. However, the development of inhibitors—neutralizing antibodies against FVIII—can occur in some patients, requiring regular monitoring of FVIII activity and inhibitor titers and adjustment of therapy.
