Förbränningskedjan, or the combustion chain reaction, describes the series of chemical reactions that occur during the burning of a fuel. It is a fundamental concept in understanding how fires start, spread, and are extinguished. The chain reaction is initiated when a fuel source is exposed to sufficient heat and oxygen. Initially, a small amount of energy is required to break down the fuel molecules into simpler, reactive species. These species then react with oxygen, releasing heat and producing new, highly reactive intermediates. These intermediates, in turn, react with more fuel or oxygen, perpetuating the process and releasing more energy. This self-sustaining cycle is what characterizes a chain reaction.
