Exposedmetal

Exposedmetal is a term used in design and materials science to describe metal surfaces that are intentionally left unprotected or have had protective finishes removed to reveal the bare metal. The term can refer to both raw industrial materials and finished surfaces that are designed to weather or patinate over time, producing a distinctive visual texture.

In practice, different metals develop characteristic appearances when exposed to air and moisture. Mild steel and iron corrode to form reddish-brown rust; copper and bronze acquire a greenish patina called verdigris; aluminum forms a dull oxide film that can thicken and alter color. The process is influenced by environment, humidity, pollutants, and alloy composition.

Applications: The exposed metal aesthetic is common in architecture, sculpture, and product design. Weathering steel, such as Corten, is used for its rusted look and self-protecting oxide layer. Copper and brass are used for roofing and facades to create patinas that range from orange to green over time. In interiors, exposed metal elements convey industrial chic and honesty of materials.

Care and maintenance: Exposed metals require consideration of corrosion and stability. Some projects embrace patina as part of the design; others implement controlled exposure or protective treatments (clear coatings, sealants, passivation) to slow undesired oxidation while preserving appearance.
