Exergi

Exergi is a term that appears in some texts as a variant spelling of exergy or as a proper noun in certain projects or brands. In standard thermodynamics, exergy is the measure of the maximum useful work obtainable from a system as it comes into equilibrium with its surroundings. When used in technical writing, exergi is typically treated as interchangeable with exergy or noted as a misspelling rather than a distinct concept.

Exergy depends on the state of the system and the environmental conditions, such as temperature, pressure, and chemical composition. Unlike energy, which is conserved, exergy is destroyed by irreversibilities in real processes—friction, mixing, heat transfer with finite temperature differences, and chemical reactions not at equilibrium. The exergy balance quantifies the input, output, destruction, and accumulation of exergy in a system or process.

Applications of exergy analysis include evaluating and improving the efficiency of power plants, industrial processes, heating and cooling networks, and buildings. By highlighting where irreversibilities occur, exergy analysis helps engineers design waste-heat recovery, optimize component performance, and compare different energy resources on a quality-adjusted basis rather than by energy content alone. It complements traditional energy analysis by focusing on the quality of energy flows.
