Evrotas

Evrotas (Greek: Ευρώτας) is a name used for two related geographic references in southern Greece: the Eurotas River and the municipality of Evrotas in the Laconia regional unit of the Peloponnese.

The Eurotas River is a major watercourse in the Peloponnese, flowing through the Laconia region and emptying into the Laconian Gulf. It traverses the interior of the peninsula and its valley has long supported agriculture and settlement, with numerous communities located along its banks. The river has played a central role in the history and development of the surrounding area.

The municipality of Evrotas is a local government area within the Laconia regional unit of the Peloponnese. It was established under the Kallikratis reform around 2010–2011 by merging several former municipalities. The municipality covers a predominantly rural part of eastern Laconia and encompasses multiple communities. Its economy is largely agricultural, with crops such as olives, citrus, and grains, complemented by livestock farming. The region experiences a Mediterranean climate, characterized by hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters, which supports agricultural activity.
