Europæisk

Europæisk is the Danish adjective meaning "European." It describes relation to Europe by geography, culture, politics, economy or institutions. The word derives from the name Europa (from Greek and Latin) combined with the Danish suffix -isk, which corresponds to English -ic/-ish and similar adjectival endings in other European languages.

In Danish orthography Europæisk contains the letter æ, a distinct vowel in the Danish alphabet. The adjective inflects for number and definiteness: common gender singular en europæisk by, neuter singular et europæisk land, plural/definite de europæiske lande. It appears in many fixed expressions and institutional names, for example Den Europæiske Union (the European Union) and europæisk samarbejde (European cooperation).

Cognates appear across Germanic and Romance languages (German europäisch, Swedish/ Norwegian europeisk, French européen, English European), reflecting a shared etymology. Usage covers broad domains such as politics (europæisk lovgivning), culture (europæisk kunst), economy (europæisk marked) and identity (europæisk statsborger).

As an adjective it differs from the noun europæer, meaning "a European" (a person). Contemporary usage follows modern Danish spelling conventions; alternate forms without æ are found in other Scandinavian languages but not in standard Danish.
