Etukäteismaksuja, or advance payments, are a common practice in commercial transactions. These payments are made by a buyer to a seller before the delivery of goods or the provision of services. The purpose of an etukäteismaksu is typically to secure the transaction, reduce the seller's risk, or provide working capital for the seller to commence or complete their obligations.

The amount of an etukäteismaksu can vary significantly. It might be a small percentage of the total cost, a fixed deposit, or even the full amount depending on the nature of the agreement, the value of the goods or services, and the trust between the parties. In some industries, such as construction or custom manufacturing, substantial advance payments are standard.

While etukäteismaksuja offer benefits to sellers, they also carry risks for buyers. If the seller fails to fulfill their end of the bargain after receiving the advance payment, the buyer may have difficulty recovering their funds. Therefore, it is often advisable for buyers to consider the seller's reputation and to ensure that the agreement clearly outlines the terms for the return of the advance payment in case of non-performance. Contracts may include clauses that specify when and how the advance payment will be applied or refunded.
