Ettuthogai

Ettuthogai is a foundational collection of eight anthologies of classical Tamil poetry. These works are considered part of the Sangam literature, dating back to the period between 300 BCE and 300 CE. The anthologies offer a rich and diverse glimpse into the life, culture, politics, and emotions of ancient Tamil society.

The eight anthologies are Puranaanooru, Purananooru, Mattrunanooru, Narrinai, Kuruntogai, Aingurunooru, Kalittogai, and Paripaadal. Each anthology is characterized by its unique thematic focus and stylistic conventions. Puranaanooru and Purananooru primarily deal with heroic deeds, warfare, and the lives of kings and chieftains, often referred to as "puram" poetry. Narrinai, Kuruntogai, and Aingurunooru focus on love and human relationships, categorized as "akam" poetry. Kalittogai is a mixed anthology, featuring both akam and puram themes, while Paripaadal is known for its lyrical and devotional verses, often associated with specific deities and festivals.

The poems within Ettuthogai are attributed to numerous poets, some of whom are well-known figures in Tamil literary history.
