Etelcalcet
Etelcalcet is a synthetic calcimimetic agent. It is used in the management of secondary hyperparathyroidism in adult patients with chronic kidney disease who are on dialysis. Secondary hyperparathyroidism is a condition where the parathyroid glands produce too much parathyroid hormone, leading to elevated calcium levels in the blood. Etelcalcet works by binding to the calcium-sensing receptor on the parathyroid glands, mimicking the effect of calcium. This binding reduces the secretion of parathyroid hormone. The drug is administered intravenously at the end of hemodialysis sessions. Common side effects may include hypocalcemia, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. It is important for patients to be monitored for calcium levels during treatment. Etelcalcet is part of a class of medications that aim to control the hormonal imbalances associated with kidney disease.
