Esthétique

Esthétique is the French term for aesthetics, the branch of philosophy concerned with beauty, taste, art, and the sensory experience of perceptual phenomena. It analyzes how judgments of beauty are made, what makes objects or performances valuable as art, and how forms, mediums, and contexts influence perception. The field covers theory of art, criticism, design, and the arts more broadly, including visual art, music, literature, and architecture. It distinguishes between the perception of sensibility and evaluative judgments about merit or meaning.

The word aesthetics derives from the Greek aisthēsis for perception, and in philosophy the field grew in prominence in the 18th century with Baumgarten, who helped formulate its scope, while Kant offered influential accounts of aesthetic judgment as subjective yet universal in its appeal. In the French tradition esthétiques developed through Diderot and the Enlightenment, with later writers such as Baudelaire addressing modernity, artifice, and taste. In the 20th century, phenomenology, structuralism, and postmodern theory broadened discussions of embodiment, interpretation, and the social construction of taste.

Key topics include the nature of beauty and the sublime; the autonomy of art versus moral or social function; the relation of form to content; mimesis and expression; canon formation and criticism.
