Esteröintireaktio, often referred to as esterification, is a chemical reaction where an alcohol and an acid combine to form an ester and water. This reaction is a type of nucleophilic acyl substitution. Typically, the acid is a carboxylic acid, and the alcohol can be any alcohol, from simple methanol to complex polyols. The reaction is often catalyzed by a strong acid, such as sulfuric acid, to increase the reaction rate.

The general form of the esterification reaction is RCOOH + R'OH ⇌ RCOOR' + H2O, where R represents an alkyl or aryl group. The equilibrium nature of the reaction means that both reactants and products are present at the same time. To drive the reaction towards the formation of the ester, either the alcohol or the carboxylic acid is often used in excess, or the water produced is removed from the reaction mixture.

Esters are a significant class of organic compounds found naturally in fruits and flowers, contributing to their characteristic aromas and flavors. Industrially, esterification is used in the synthesis of a wide range of products, including solvents, plasticizers, perfumes, and pharmaceuticals. For example, the reaction of acetic acid with ethanol produces ethyl acetate, a common solvent. The reverse reaction, hydrolysis, breaks down esters back into their constituent alcohol and carboxylic acid, usually by reaction with water.
