Eskasoni

Eskasoni is a Mi’kmaq First Nation community on Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia, Canada. It is the largest Mi’kmaq community in the world by population. The community is located on the eastern part of Cape Breton, near the town of Sydney, and comprises reserve lands administered by the Eskasoni First Nation. The people maintain a strong Mi’kmaq language and cultural identity, supported by language programs and cultural institutions that emphasize revitalization and preservation. A cultural centre and related programs support the arts, music, crafts, and performances.

Eskasoni is governed by a Chief and Council elected under the Indian Act. The band provides a range of services for residents, including education, health care, housing, and social programs. Eskasoni Health Centre delivers medical and community health services to residents and neighboring communities. The First Nation also manages local facilities such as schools, community centres, and housing initiatives, and collaborates with provincial and federal governments on programs.

The economy in Eskasoni relies on a mix of community services, public sector employment, small businesses, and cultural tourism. The community is active in efforts to preserve Mi’kmaq language and traditions and participates in regional and national Indigenous organizations and councils.
