One common application is in long division where the divisor might be a multi-digit number. Before starting the formal division, a rough estimate or simplification of the divisor might be made to make it easier to determine the first digit of the quotient. This could involve rounding the divisor to a nearby simpler number, like a power of ten, to get a quick estimate.

Multiplying or dividing both numbers by the same value does not change the result of the division but can sometimes lead to numbers that are easier to work with.
