Epähemeentsyymit, also known as non-heme enzymes, are a broad class of enzymes that contain a metal ion or a metal-containing cofactor that is not a heme group. Heme groups, which are porphyrin rings containing an iron atom, are characteristic of many metalloenzymes, such as cytochromes and hemoglobin. In contrast, non-heme enzymes utilize metal ions like iron, copper, manganese, or zinc, often coordinated to amino acid residues within the enzyme's active site.
