Epilaryngeal

Epilaryngeal refers to the epilarynx, the portion of the larynx located immediately above the true vocal folds. It forms part of the upper laryngeal cavity, extending from the laryngeal inlet down to the glottis. The epilarynx is bounded laterally by the aryepiglottic folds and lies in front of the laryngeal walls and epiglottis.

Anatomy and features: The epilarynx includes the epilaryngeal tube and surrounding soft tissues. In voice science and clinical anatomy, the epilaryngeal constrictor muscles wrap around the epilaryngeal inlet and can narrow the epilaryngeal space. This region plays a role in modulating the acoustic and aerodynamic properties of phonation, influencing voice quality and spectral characteristics. The epilaryngeal area also participates in protecting the airway during swallowing by coordinating movements of the laryngeal inlet.

Function and relevance: The epilarynx contributes to airway resistance and voice production. Dynamic adjustments of the epilaryngeal space can affect vocal efficiency, timbre, and high-frequency energy. In singing and speech, controlled epilaryngeal constriction is noted as part of normal voice regulation in some pedagogical models, though normal variation exists across individuals.

Clinical relevance: The epilaryngeal region is evaluated in laryngoscopy and related imaging when assessing voice disorders, swallowing problems, or laryngeal pathology. Pathologies in this area may alter voice quality or airway protection and require targeted clinical management.
