Enzymecatalysed

Enzymecatalysed refers to a chemical reaction that is sped up by an enzyme. Enzymes are biological molecules, typically proteins, that act as catalysts in living organisms. They achieve this catalytic function by lowering the activation energy of a reaction, making it occur more readily under physiological conditions.

These reactions are highly specific, meaning a particular enzyme will usually catalyze only one or a very small number of closely related reactions. This specificity arises from the unique three-dimensional structure of the enzyme, particularly its active site, which is shaped to bind to specific reactant molecules, known as substrates. The binding of the substrate to the active site forms an enzyme-substrate complex.

Within this complex, the enzyme facilitates the chemical transformation of the substrate into product(s). Once the reaction is complete, the product(s) are released from the active site, and the enzyme is free to bind to another substrate molecule and repeat the process. This makes enzymes incredibly efficient and reusable catalysts.

Enzymecatalysed reactions are fundamental to almost all biological processes, including metabolism, DNA replication, muscle contraction, and digestion. Without enzymes, these essential reactions would occur too slowly to sustain life.
